LCARA Announces 501(c)(3) Nonprofit Status to Enhance Amateur Radio Education
Lapeer County Amateur Radio Association (LCARA) supports awareness and growth of amateur radio communications and related education for Lapeer and surrounding communities.

Lapeer, MI, December 23, 2020 (w8lap.com) – The LCARA (Lapeer County Amateur Radio Association) board is proud to announce it is now officially a non-profit organization with tax-exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) of the United States Internal Revenue Code. As a public charity, LCARA is also now eligible to apply for government and foundation grants, which will further broaden its access to resources and strengthen its ability to provide technical educational events and programs to Lapeer and surrounding communities in southeast Michigan. LCARA’s mission is to support awareness and growth of amateur radio communications, encourage radio experimentation, advances in radio technology, and related education in our community.
“Obtaining 501(c)(3) status will enhance LCARA’s ability and mission to educate and share the art of Amateur Radio with the people of Lapeer and surrounding communities.” remarked Scott Nicholes, President of LCARA. “Obtaining nonprofit status significant milestone for our growing organization, and we are excited to give amateur radio operators and technical enthusiasts more opportunities to expand their knowledge through radio experimentation and technology education opportunities” he added.
Since its formation in 1953 by the late Hollis Hayes, the Lapeer County Amateur Radio Association (LCARA) has maintained a constant presence in Lapeer County. The club has always welcomed all licensed amateurs and non-hams alike. LCARA’s has recently refocused their goal to promote the amateur radio hobby and support those interested in amateur radio in Lapeer County and surrounding communities of southeast Michigan. LCARA owns and operates two repeaters in Lapeer County used for local radio communications. LCARA also provides public service communications for special events and emergency radio operations in the event of a local, regional, or national disaster. LCARA is an ARRL Affiliated Club – ARRL, The national association for amateur radio – www.arrl.org.
LCARA meets on the second Tuesday of each month at the Lapeer Center Building located at 425 County Center St, Lapeer, Michigan at 7:30pm ET. Public is welcome to attend. Additional information can be found by visiting the LCARA website, www.w8lap.com.
